Small Report of the Copyright Issues AD-HOC Group Activities

History of the CIAHG

The CIAHG has been created in Seoul during the 12th DAVIC meeting by the Security TC in order to deal with Copyright Protection and Copyright Management. Since then it has been chaired by JF Delaigle (Université catholique de Louvain) on the behalf of TALISMAN.

Main Objectives

The CIAHG mainly focuses on professional piracy with a high priority for the broadcast world. The Copy Control Ad-Hoc Group (CCAHG) is another subgroup that has been created in other to deal with private piracy. The two subject have been separated because the required technologies are very different. The first purpose of the CIAHG is to create a framework that would allow for the declaration of copyright by copyright owner side and for the clarification of contract conditions that would be necessary for bona fide persons and organizations concerned which are going to use properly the copyrighted works to be distributed or transferred. The second purpose is to create another framework that would support monitoring which is effective for the verification of both of the content integrity and the copyright/contract information integrity, and for the detection copyright and/or contract violations as professional piracy. The main purpose iof the CCAHG is to create the other framework that would provide the most cost effective subsystems (service consumer side equipment: STU) in the point of copyright issues, such as copy control defined as the restriction of an "agent" from producing perfect digital copies of a copyrighted work.

Documents and Issues

The CIAHG is responsible for the edition of informative document still internal to DAVIC (DAVIC 13B27R40.doc). This document is supposed to be incorporated into the DAVIC part 10 specifications as soon as it will become normative. It also includes the outputs from the CCAHG. The very big isssue is the Seventh CALL FOR PROPOSAL on "Copy Control, Monitoring and Copy Control. This CFP7 is available from the DAVIC official site.
